Crane Meadows Nature Center. Situated along the Platte River, Crane Meadows Nature Center is a beautiful place to experience the annual spring (late February through early April) migrations of 500,000 Sandhill Cranes - one of the largest congregations of migratory birds on North America, and sometimes the rare Whooping Crane. Hall County has been named the number one place in the world for bird watchers by Forbes FYI Magazine, and the Platte River Basin is the only ecosystem along the crane migration route that meets all of their requirements for roosting, resting, and restoring themselves. Crane Meadows provides programs, educational workshops, lectures, and tours throughout the year. Hiking and prairie trails meander through beautiful flowers and grasses, ramble over sandy knolls with cactus, and zigzag through fragrant groves of eastern red cedar. River-edge and riparian forest trails familiarize hikers with the Platte River. A thirty-five foot high observation tower located on the north bank of the Platte River offers a perfect vantage point to view the cranes and trails. Visit the Crane Meadows Interpretive Center and Gift Shop. Visit www.cranemeadows.org.
